BIKE GRAVEL PIETRALUNGA GRAVEL
The start of the route is from Piazza VII Maggio, starting by taking Via Roma and then following the paved road in the direction of Gubbio(SP204).
After several hairpin bends we come to a fork, follow the signs for “Nogna,” after about 2.5 km turn right onto a dirt road, where we will find signs for SanFaustino and Santa Certa.
From here the real Gravel trail begins, up and down gravel roads with breathtaking views.
Follow the San Faustino signs until you reach the fork just above the Abbey San Faustino Resort, from here turn left down a downhill dirt road (SP203).
Continuing to pedal and leaving the beautiful Abbey on our right, we will enter a dense pine forest where we will meet another fork, the directions to follow will be Monte San Faustino and Montevalentino.
We will walk the Trail of the historic San Faustino Brigade, a Partisan formation created during the Umbrian Resistance.
Soon the dirt road will end and we will find ourselves on a steep downhill asphalt road, at which point pay attention to turn right and enter the hamlet of San Lorenzo. We will soon encounter an artificial dam and a steep asphalt road.
Always keeping to our right, pedal to the junction where we will find signs for “Corlo.” Then turning left we will descend to the intersection with Provincial Road 201.
At the Stop sign, turn left and follow the straight stretch of SP201 to the junction for Montone. Here turn left again.
Going up SP 201, just before the sign that indicates “Montone” , which is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, in which it is worth making a stop to admire the beautiful historic center, we turn right onto a road with a paved bottom alternating with well-trodden dirt road, which will take us to SP 106, passing just above the “Pieve de Saddi”(https://www.iluoghidelsilenzio.it/pieve-de-saddi-pietralunga-pg/), and the Confornano area. This stretch of road is characterized by a valley-like morphology, with continuous ups and downs, but remaining mostly always on a ridge that opens up glimpses and views that amply repay the effort. Once we take the SP 106, there will be a chance to take a breather by tackling about 5 km of descent on an asphalt surface to the locality “Cainardi.” Here there will be the junction that
divides the “Medium Gravel” route, turning right and re-entering Pietralunga, and the “Long Gravel” route, which requires you to turn left instead.
After crossing the long straight stretch and after the Casa del Fattore locality we will face another crossroads, turn right following the signs for Molino Maccheroni and Monte Splendore.
Keeping always on the paved road and leaving the Cailuca Farm on our left, we will soon find ourselves putting our wheels on a dirt road. We will find a fork in the road at this point, and turning right, the dirt road will begin to climb steeply until we reach the beautiful church of Castelfranco.
At the fork, which is behind the Church, turn left, direction Castelguelfo following the SP201, which will take us to an intersection from which we will turn right and find ourselves on a dirt road that will begin to climb.
After a succession of ups and downs, and always keeping to our left at the forks, the intersection with Provincial Road 101 will be encountered.
Turning right we will first encounter, on our right, the Chiciabocca Country House and immediately after, on our left, the Ristorante Bar Martinelli in Acquapartita.
Immediately after passing the Restaurant, turn right towards Collantico. At this point we will travel down a long descent, initially gravel then asphalt, until we meet the intersection with Provincial Road 201.
At this point continue left, following the signs for Pianello di Cagli, until you reach another intersection with SP208, where we will have to turn right towards Gubbio.
After a few hundred meters we will see a dirt road entering our right, continuing on this road we will begin a steep ascent on a dirt road characterized by a few sections of uneven ground, until we reach the hamlet of Morena.
We will come to a crossroads and continue on the paved road to start going downhill and then uphill for a few kilometers crossing Vocabolo Salceto Lame.
Continuing to climb, past the small village of Salceto Lame, the road after a few kilometers will begin to descend. We will have to be careful at this point in taking, downhill, the dirt road that we will find on our right in the direction of San Pietro.
Shortly thereafter we will find ourselves right on the summit above the village of Pietralunga. Going down a steep descent initially of gravel then of asphalt we will find ourselves right in the starting square.
