TRAIL MTB MTB 01

We start out from Pietralunga, more precisely from Piazza VII Maggio, travel the entire length of Via Roma to the junction with the Salceto Lame municipal road and continue along the latter, which is a little narrow but with a good road surface.

Approximately 2 km after the crossroads, on the right-hand side of the road, there is an intersection with a dirt road (558) which leads us to the M.de Chicchioni house for a short stretch on the flat.

From here, keeping to the left, you will find the first entrance to an evocative undergrowth path (725) that will take you up about 1.5 to 2 km to the Collelungo farmhouse, now used as a cattle shelter, located in a panoramic position about 750 metres above sea level.

As soon as we leave the Casale behind us and keep to our right, we find the junction for the entrance to the Anello del lupo (120a), a very technical route with not a few difficulties, especially for MTB beginners, presents itself from the outset, as we continue through shady oak groves that continue to give way to black pine forests.

At the end of the pine forest and after about 3 km of ups and downs, you will pass the old ruins of the Renzini house (750m asl).

At this point, we will exit onto an unpaved road (814) and, keeping to our left, we will find ourselves on a short uphill stretch of road that will take us to the entrance of the Monti del Vento path (848). We will then leave the dirt road and take the path on our left and after about 1.5 km of ups and downs we will find ourselves on the plain at the most beautiful viewpoint of the Monti del Vento.

Continuing along this path, and after passing a technical stretch on a slight descent, we will come to an intersection. Keeping to the left, we walk through a dense pine forest until we notice the sign indicating San Pietro (120) located on the only path that descends to the right.

The descending path goes through dense boxwood, so the vegetation also changes, characterised by damp aquiline ferns. There are watering holes at the lowest points. Ascending in altitude, one follows the mule track until passing a gate, thus leaving the state-owned grazing area and immediately putting the wheels on the municipal asphalt road leading to Salceto Lame.

We now keep to our left and descend along the tarmac road for about 200-300 metres, immediately finding the entrance to the right of a beaten path through the pine forest. We will then follow the path that will take us to the crossroads of Casa di Franchi (813), and keeping to our right and after travelling for about 3-4 km alongside the old ruin of Casa di Franchi, we will arrive at the top of the Castelvecchio viewpoint (830 m above sea level), where we can see the peak of Monte Nerone and further to the right Monte Catria.

Descending we come to a fork in the road and keeping to the left for about 1-2 km we find ourselves on the provincial road (SP201), which connects Pietralunga to Pianello di Cagli and thus to the border between Umbria and Marche.

At this point, we turn left and after about 400 metres, keeping to our right, a short but technical uphill stretch begins that will take us out onto the tarmac road of the ‘Muro di Castelfranco’.

Continuing along this stretch of road on a considerable incline, we arrive at the beautiful viewpoint of Mount Castellaccio (735 metres above sea level), just above the characteristic Mandrelli di Castelfranco restaurant.

Here we also find the ‘Madonna del Viandante’ (Our Lady of the Wayfarer), a recently erected monument strongly desired by the friendly Don Antonio, near which we take path 119 with a surface of beaten earth and mostly loose stones. As one descends, the stone underfoot becomes more regular until it forms a stupendous paved road from the Roman era, which in ancient times linked the site of Forum Iulii Concupiense, in the Carpina valley, to the Flaminia consular road. The itinerary then reaches, after about 1.5 km, the vicinity of San Felice, a perilous little country church. Here we turn right twice, resuming a stretch of road with a more stable asphalt surface. As soon as you pass the locality Caiburroni you turn right entering a beaten earth path near an aqueduct cistern. The itinerary continues on the valley path that opens up among downy oaks and broom until it reaches, via a downhill single track, the locality of Molino Maccherone. From here we proceed uphill for about 1.5 km on a road that is at first ‘paved’, then with an asphalt surface in the direction of the ‘La Cerqua’ holiday farm. As soon as we pass the agriturismo, we turn right to take a path of pebbles and loose stones that leads us back to the asphalt road in the direction of Candeleto. Passing via via dei tigli and bypassing the residential area along a well-trodden path at Col de fiore, we come to a crossroads where we turn right in the direction of Monte Croce, taking path no. 113. Once we reach the summit of Monte Croce (711 m), characterised by its imposing cross, we start to descend again towards Pietralunga along the ‘Sentiero natura’ (nature trail), which has a very technical and fun dirt surface. Passing through the ‘Scarpone’ locality, after a very short asphalt stretch, we turn left towards ‘Ca’ Pizzichelli’. From here, after taking the last downhill track, you will return to the asphalt road near the town’s industrial area, passing Via B. Buozzi and a stretch of Via G. Marconi, we will return to Piazza VII Maggio.
